Laureus Sporting Moment

A Laureus Sporting Moment highlights the true essence of sporting values. Each moment epitomises qualities such as fair play, sportsmanship, dedication, inclusion, advocacy or overcoming adversity..

Looking beyond the scoreboard or winner’s rostrum, Laureus Sporting Moments and the stories behind them, bring to life the belief that sport has the power to change the world and the ability to unite people.

For years, Laureus Sporting Moments have been at the heart of sport and have been recognised by the very best of sport through Laureus Academy Members and Ambassadors.

Here, and across Laureus’ social media channels, stories from around the world will be showcased and individuals will tell their Laureus Sporting Moments in their own words.

A Moment Of Determination

Jacky Hunt-Broersma - A Moment of Determination

This Laureus Sporting Moment is the inspirational story of adaptive athlete Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who ran a staggering 104 marathons in 104 days - a Guinness World Record.

Jacky discusses her motivation to take on the challenge, raising funds for Amputee Blade Runners and other adaptive athletes, also how the challenge helped to develop her own self-belief.

Since, Jacky has now started another challenge – a 250-day 21km/13.1 miles streak for Cancer Research.

A Moment Of Hope

Afghanistan Women's Football Team and Melbourne Victory FC – A Moment of Hope

This Laureus Sporting Moment is the powerful story of the Afghanistan Women's Football Team.

This is the story of how they first arrived in Australia through the help of the Australian government and human rights activists and then the incredible support given to them by Melbourne Victory Football Club to keep them safe and able to play the sport they love as a team together.

A Moment For Peace

Dmytro Keda and FC Shakhtar Donetsk - A Moment for PeAce

This Laureus Sporting Moment is the story of FC Shakhtar Donetsk’s kindness to young Ukrainian refugee Dmytro Keda, who spent a day with the team during their Global Tour for Peace.

Dmytro and his family were forced to flee from their hometown of Mariupol following the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. After enduring an unimaginably difficult time, Dmytro became an honorary member of FC Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland. He was welcomed as a team member, met his footballing heroes and scored a goal to remember against Lechia Gdask.

This Laureus Sporting Moment truly shows the positive power of sport.

A Moment of Perseverance

Nelly Attar - A moment of perseverance

Nelly Attar is the first Arab woman to summit K2 - the world’s second highest peak, known as the 'Savage Mountain’ due to its treacherous and unforgiving nature.

She was inspired by her late father, seeking to honour his memory and held onto his favourite quote, 'Only those who risk going far can find out how far they can go,' throughout her climb.

Nelly hopes that summiting K2 will inspire women and young girls in Lebanon and the Middle East and show them what’s possible.

A Moment of Inclusion

Finlay Fisher and Jack Grealish - A Moment for Inclusion

This moment started with a letter sent by young Finlay Fisher to his hero Jack Grealish.

Finlay, who has cerebral palsy, wrote to the Manchester City and England player to say how much he admired the footballer and the bond that Jack has with his own sister, who also has cerebral palsy.

Upon receiving the letter, Jack wanted to surprise Finlay and get to know the young fan who had found his confidence through disability football with City in the Community.

A strong bond developed which was shown on the world stage when Jack performed a very special goal celebration for his young friend.
